John, the disciple whom the Lord loved, wrote this gospel through God’s inspiration when he was old. He used to be a fisherman, but one day, when he and his brother, James, were on their boat mending their nets, the Lord Jesus called them. Immediately they left the boat, said goodbye to their father and followed Jesus. Such a blessed decision was most touching. It was also one that they would never regret. John was by nature fierce like “Sons of Thunder,” but he was subsequently melted by the Lord’s fervent love and became an apostle full of love.
